Eastern Chad faces a humanitarian crisis as resources run critically low
Over 800,000 people are fleeing across the border. This massive influx is placing immense pressure on already strained resources. With limited support for refugees, Medair is on the ground providing essential WASH and Nutrition assistance.
The needs
Chad is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as 700,000 Sudanese refugees have fled conflict since April 2023, overwhelming Chad's limited resources and putting drinking water and food supplies at risk. Historically, Chad has low coping capacity, ranking among the lowest on the Human Development Index, and was already hosting many refugees before this surge. The country also faces political instability, economic underdevelopment, and frequent humanitarian crises, which further strain its resources despite its rich cultural heritage and natural resources.

Our difference
We assist those displaced by conflict, concentrating our efforts on areas with the most urgent needs and limited support, specifically targeting Sudanese refugees in transit sites and new camps. Since April 2024, our mandate in Chad has been to provide essential emergency water, sanitation and nutrition aid. We focus particularly on the most vulnerable: children under 5 and pregnant or breastfeeding women, who are at the highest risk of acute malnutrition.
