Safe Water is a Right for Everyone
The Syrian sun beats down mercilessly on the parched land. For years, communities across the country have grappled with a devastating water crisis, a silent enemy that saps their strength and shatters their hope.
However, through a project funded by the European Commission – ECHO – Medair supported more than 105,000 people to access safe and clean water in three of the most vulnerable communities in the east, north and south of Syria.
The targeted residents in Deir ez Zor, eastern Syria, Aleppo northern Syria and Quneitra, southern Syria were facing severe water related problems. Many lacked sufficient access to safe water, many had no water reaching their homes, and many relied on what came from damaged water stations.
Unfortunately, alternative water sources are both expensive and unreliable. Given the dire economic situation in Syria, many families struggle to afford these costs, leaving them with no choice but to consume unsafe water.
Saeed and his six family members had no access to water at all before Medair repaired Al Haidaria strategic water network in Aleppo. Saeed shared, “We used to buy water for daily usage and borrow water to drink from our relatives and neighbours,” Saeed said describing the challenge they faced.
The Al Haidaria network, which supplies water to over ten neighbourhoods in Aleppo, was severely impacted by the prolonged crisis. A devastating earthquake that struck the region in February 2023, further exacerbated the situation. Damaged pipelines hindered water delivery, reducing water supply to homes to once a week in optimal conditions.
Engineer Ammar, Medair's Water and Sanitation Officer, explained, 'What sets this project apart is the strategic importance of the Al Haidaria water network. It serves as a lifeline for over 30,000 people. Additionally, the strong coordination between Medair and local partners has been instrumental in its success. Securing the necessary tools and equipment would have been challenging without the support of the Aleppo water establishment’.
On the other side of the country, Medair’s rehabilitation and solarisation of Al Sayyal water station in rural Deir ez Zor transformed the station from a source of disease to a symbol of hope. “I am so pleased to get clean water for the first time in years. Even when we used to buy water, it was not clean, and my children got sick many times,” stated Yusra, a resident of Al Sayyal, as her eyes filled with gratitude.
Moving to the south, Medair rehabilitated and solarised a water borehole in Al Muraba'at village, Quneitra. The positive impact was immediate. Community members gained access to safe water for extended hours.
“Despite living near the borehole, the water didn't reach my home until Medair installed the solar system,' said Eid, a grateful resident of Al Muraba'at. 'We will always cherish your support' he added.
This project encompassed the rehabilitation of three water stations in Deir-ez-Zor, a water station and water network in Aleppo, and a water borehole in Al Quneitra. Engineers and technicians worked tirelessly to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water.
With thanks to the European Commision, by restoring critical water infrastructure, Medair has not only supported countless lives but has also helped to rebuild communities and restore a sense of normalcy. As the people of Syria continue to struggle to survive, Medair's commitment to providing essential aid remains unwavering, ensuring that a brighter future is yet to come.
