Finding Strength Together

"I felt like my thoughts, feelings, and emotions were weighing me down—too much to bear with everything happening around me.” says Samira, 26, a Lebanese community member attending the session.
During the recent conflict in Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley was one of the region’s most heavily impacted by airstrikes, particularly the villages in the northern part of the valley. These communities, often secluded and overcrowded, have witnessed the horrific destruction of infrastructure and been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. This traumatic experience has caused immense stress, anxiety, and lasting trauma. Many have lost their belongings, homes, livelihoods and even loved ones, as they continue to struggle with daily life in the aftermath of the conflict. The damaged and destroyed infrastructure that remains serves as a stark reminder of the harrowing events that unfolded during that time.
For many of these participants, whose lives have been significantly impacted, connecting with like-minded individuals offers an opportunity to vent and empathize with one another, learn from each other’s experiences, and recognize that no matter the circumstances, they are not alone.
Medair is conducting peer support group sessions for vulnerable Lebanese, Syrian refugees, and other community members affected by the ongoing crisis, focusing on increasing social connectedness, creating a sense of belonging within supportive peer networks, and equipping the individuals with positive coping skills.

This session, conducted by the team for Lebanese community members, took place at the Nabichit Public Library, located in the heart of the town. The library windows were shattered due to the force of the airstrikes — a visible scar the building still bears as a reminder. Once the session started, participants were enthusiastically engaged with one another, sharing their experiences and recalling pivotal stories, which created a safe space for open dialogue and comfort. Throughout the session, many uplifting stories were shared about how families have stayed together and how communities and people from outside the communities have supported one another through difficult times. Led by Medair’s community volunteers from within the immediate community, participants also shared their own stories, strengthening the connection between group members.
"In times of conflict, struggles can feel overwhelming and isolating, as fear, loss, and uncertainty take a toll on mental well-being. I felt like my thoughts, feelings, and emotions were weighing me down—too much to bear with everything happening around me. I realized I needed to equip and empower myself with ways to overcome these emotions, so I wouldn't continue struggling with them," says Nour, 26, a Lebanese community member.
Learning healthy coping mechanisms is not just important; it’s essential. These tools help individuals regain a sense of control, feel empowered, and take the first steps toward healing, even in the toughest of times. The sessions are designed to boost self-esteem, build confidence, and guide individuals toward positive, lasting change – positive change in a time of uncertainty and struggle.

To close the session, each participant is invited to take a moment and gently close their eyes. A quiet pause draws guides the group to a moment of calm. In soft, calming tones, the community volunteers guide them through breathing exercises, encouraging inner calm and a feeling of peace. Through activities like this, Medair’s team continues to strengthen communities and provide participants with tools to support their wellbeing long after the sessions end.
